Ho to habe two SIMs for two devices (only one active at a time) under same phone number?

Hi!

This year, together with my family, we celebrate twenty years as very pleased (at least until now) T-Mobile customers.

My current phone device - which is still in perfect working order - is a Cat S61 (https://www.gsmarena.com/cat_s61-9076.php).  However, it's six year old and only 4G.  Very unfortunately, its maker (Bullitt Group) went defunct this past January, leaving it without any future worthy successors.

The primary worthy successors I found are those offered by Ulefone.  From them I just obtained the Armor 27T Pro (https://www.ulefone.com/products/armor-27t-pro, https://www.ulefone.com/a/pf_preview?id=5bb53063-6db2-4df0-a6c4-a3d09cb1f25d) which I received a bit over a week ago and it (using WiFi and a USB C-C cable) with its Android 14 OS loaded itself with all the apps from the Android 9 Cat S61 that are applicable to its Android 14.

I haven't yet placed a SIM on the Armor 27T - that's the subject of this conversation.

I'd like to keep my present Cat S61 with its present 4G SIM whilst would also like to obtain a new 5G-SA SIM for my new 27T also to be associated with my current phone number.

Please, please don't for a moment think that this is a foolish request to have two devices simultaneously operating under the same telephone number!!!

Rather, it's a request to be able to use - one device at the time - one or the other.  If one device is active on the T-Mobile network, I shall shut it down first as to allow it to orderly de-register from the network, then wait a few minutes, and turn-on the other device.  I simply want to use one device or the other without swapping SIMs - which can lead to breakage of their respective SIM holders and is a time consuming task.

I've attempted yesterday at the Town Center Boca Raton, FL T-Mobile’s "Experience Center" to accomplish such maneuver but the very kind, charming, and otherwise knowledgeable young lady that attended me indicated they don't have the technical expertise to do so and thus wasn't provided with a new SIM.  Thus I come to you to plead for help.

Please kindly indicate me what shall I do to accomplish this!

Thanks so very much!

Who actually declared this case SOLVED when it isn’t?

Apparently Verizon has a service where the subscriber declares which SIM is active: https://community.verizon.com/t5/Other-Phones/Can-I-get-a-second-SIM-card-for-the-same-phone-number/td-p/1038022

Thank you for sharing that Verizon Community link. The OP is asking for the same thing that you are looking for and the answers there are the same that you are receiving here. Your main phone number is allowed to have one sim card linked to it. There is no way to put the same phone number on a different sim card or to "print" a second sim card with the same phone/sim number on it. I also saw that someone linked Verizon's Number Share service. I read the terms and feature details for that on the linked website, and it looks like it works just like our Digits. Number Share - Mobile allows you to make and receive calls using one shared telephone number across all of your Number Share - Mobile capable Verizon LTE devices (for eligible devices). Your host smartphone's phone number ("host line") is shared by all eligible extension devices. Calls are received and sent from this shared line. Your extension device will also have its own line that will be reflected on your bill.

I know this is not the answer that you want, but the only way to share one phone number to different devices without moving your sim card around from phone to phone is through the digital features (Digits).

The system can only store and provision one SIM at a time for a single phone number.

What above has said.  In other countries you can sim dupe but it has caveats. The closest you can it a digits line and pair your number to both.

  • No, @HeavenM . DIGITS es NO the answer, I simply want to have one device at a time without swapping SIMs, not a complex proxy management system to handle multiple active devices at a time!

  • Ok, @HeavenM, quite simply the DIGITS app (https://www.t-mobile.com/apps/t-mobile-digits) is absolutely useless to me, it's unnecessarily complex (hence the $10/month charge) and intended for multiple device shadowing.  I was simply looking for a mechanism to switch between which SIM is active (either tacitly by powering down one phone before turning on the other or explicitly by a management web site/app).  That's a simple service that perhaps you can charge $10/year.

    Anyhow, thanks very much!

It's EXACTLY the same thing.  You pay per line on Verizon too.  I also don't see phones as Connected device plans in their terms so I am unsure you even get the option you are looking for,

    1. Number Share - Mobile Features. Features and requirements vary by device. Number Share - Mobile works with compatible devices on the following wireless plans: Postpaid Verizon 2.0/1.0, More Everything, Share Everything, and Unlimited (a single-line is not eligible for Number Share - Mobile). Number Share - Mobile will only work while on the Verizon LTE Network.

To use Number Share - Mobile, all of your devices must be on the same standard account or business account* with either:

    • An Unlimited plan - Your connected device must also have its own separate connected device plan.
    • A shared data plan - Your monthly data allowance is shared with your connected devices. (Shared Data plans are no longer available to add to accounts).

*Not available for prepaid or government accounts at this time.

  • I think you are right @tidbits, @HeavenM! I believe this https://www.singtel.com/business/support/faq-closure-of-multisim article properly explains the situation (perhaps T-Móvil ought to have a similar article) and we would have had a much shorter discussion!  So it seems that what I asked used to be very reasonable before but not so anymore!

Thus I'll rest my case (at least for now) as I need to study and understand why the 5G system imposed the limitation to the simple (single device at a time) scenario I intended to do.  Meanwhile perhaps you can investigate if there's some way of having an abridged (i.e. much less expensive) version of DIGITS that accomplishes what I intended to do or if you uncover a solution to the 5G dilemma.

    Thanks so much,

    Georg

GSMA would need to set a standard for this to work.  They have not as of 3G being retired moving forward to do such things.  Since everything is a data line and not a voice line anymore.

You only option is to switch sims when you want to change devices.
