I had similar response with my 13 pro max. They rejected the phone only after I signed up for service. I now have to pay $1300 for a 15 that I really didn't need. Also, they valued my regular 13 at zero dollars, kept the phone and I now pay full price for another of their phone. Customer Care is worthless and condescending.
The scam is simple. The agent, looks at your phone, tells you it’s in awesome condition, you sign the contract only to be told weeks later that they don’t like the condition of the phones you sent in.
