What do I need to do to enable OEM unlocking?

I recently got an insurance-provided Motorola One 5G Ace and would like to use LineageOS on it, but the option to enable OEM unlocking is greyed out and says "Connect to the internet or contact your carrier." I was able to enable this setting on another insurance-provided phone before, but I can't remember what I did to do it. I read online somewhere you have to wait 7 days, is this true?

  • The setting is no longer greyed out, so I guess I did just have to wait.

Tokens work via flashing, at least from how things worked with OnePlus.  You requested the token from their support with the devices serial and IMEI and you would use the token they sent to flash with ADB to enable EOM unlockong.

It is possible an update for the device removed the option to OEM unlock it.  Motorola would know better than anyone else.

@syaoran I was able to OEM unlock the same type of device also from T-Mobile insurance just 1 or 2 months ago, so that's strange. Motorola does have a token for fully OEM unlocking, but it requires that setting to be enabled.

@syaoran The device is already permanently SIM unlocked.

Then it might not be possible to OEM Unlock.  Google has taken a heavy stance on rooted devices. disabling things like RCS and other popular features on devices to the point where OEM is permanently disabled by the manufacturer.  Samsung US and Canadian devices are not possible to OEM unlock without an exploit and because of how difficult that is.  Third party development for those devices has disappeared.  Have you reached out to Motorola support to see if they offer some sort of token, like OnePlus used to, that has to be requested to OEM unlock the boitloader?  They might have completely disabled the ability to do so and that is becoming more and more common.

It varies a lot by device manufacturer.  Usually when a device is SIM locked to a carrier, IEM Unlocking will remain greyed out until the device is permanently SIM unlocked.
