DNS provider for Home Internet
Greetings,
I am disappointed that I am not able to select my own DNS provider(s) for this service. My previous service allowed me to configure two different providers for redundancy purposes. Also, if you like to use services like OpenDNS to protect your family, you don't get the option now.
Are there any plans to allow T-Mobile customers to select their own DNS?

Comcast sucks. I’m happy with faster and reasonably priced internet (there is a tower within shooting distance of my front door, YMMV).
I want to use Cloudflare DNS with the free family filters (malware and porn). My workaround is to use my old AC (Wi-Fi 5) router with the DNS settings, plugged into the gateway
The gateway SSID is hidden, and has a password I don't know. (Just like the router).
I was going to decommission the router, but this works.
Oh and TMobile doesn’t offer the content guard for home.

+1! Allow the paying customer to set the DNS of choice!

Thank you. Most of us expect standard feature set with consumer grade equipment ... and as customers we I feel we all do expect this. My honest opinion … Suggesting or considering customers to go out and pick-up networking equipment, because of the lack of standard networking features, is not a great customer experience. I believe most of us are wanting to eliminate the tyranny of the boxes as much as possible. Personally, I don't want my living-room, or any of my rooms for that matter, looking like a corporate LAN switching room with networking gear, boxes, cables, and blinky lights everwhere. But I thank you and respect your opinion. TMO can for sure do better when it comes to this and I expect they will. Thank you again.

Ok. I think we and most of us on some of these 'DNS threads' may disagree with you on the importance of standard DNS and consumer grade router functions as the rest of the industry delivers on their hardware. Just wonder why TMO product made such a big miss - Your not a TMO Product Manager are you?
No I am not. I never said selecting your own DNS provider is not important. I am giving you a personal opinion of you are better off getting a separate router because all 3rd party routers support this DNS feature. I am using my preferred DNS instead of TMO default as I am typing this. I just manage it on my mesh router instead of the TMO gateway/router.
If you are also saying that most people use their servicer provider routers for home networking, then who is buying the millions of 3rd party wifi routers each month?
I realize that a 3rd party router adds a one time cost to your networking so that is something everyone needs to decide on.

Yes, but Tmobile Internet Gateway does not have the option to change your DNS? Did I understand that correctly Cali Cat?
At present, no, there is no way to change DNS via app or web interface in the TMO gateway routers.
Wow! That is like a standard option on all routers and internet gateways since the early 90's … I am curious why Tmobile choose not include this option so that consumers have the ability use the DNS of their own choosing on the Tmobile Internet Gateway? Seems like a fairly obvious miss from a product perspective … VERY odd wouldn't you agree?
Yes and no. Yes, for the fact there are no basic router options in the current firmware. No in that I personally don't want to use my internet provider's gateway as my router since I want the flexibility to change providers as often as I see fit without have to go through setup every time. In fact most 3rd party routers these days allow you to export your settings so you can upgrade to a new model and import those settings in one step.
Personally, I wish TMO would just add the following which can only be done on their gateway:
- Bridge mode - this disables DHCP on the gateway so I only ave DHCP on my router.
- Band locking - once I find a primary and secondary band that works the best for me, I want to lock those rather than the gateway randomly changing it.
- Public IP geolocation - This is probably a major effort but TMO needs to figure out a way to match the gateway IP to within the geolocation of the physical gateway. Right now your geolocation may be 100+ miles from your physical location which is causing problems with apps/websites that rely on IP based geolocation.
If I think even more extreme, I would rather TMO offer a gateway with no router so the hardware can come with better antennae and possibly weather proofing that allows the gateway to be mounted outside. In short - TMO should focus on cell reception and bandwidth instead of router features.

You can add your own router and enable DHCP if you want to change DNS services. Most newer routers have this feature, but check to make sure. I use an Asus ZenWifi mesh and have my DNS pointed to the Google public DNS servers.
