Published: December 1, 2023 |4 min read If you live in anywhere other than a rural area, Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) may seem like an outdated internet option that's mostly been phased out. After all, DSL delivers internet connectivity through good, old-fashioned copper telephone lines-not exactly the first thing that comes to mind for streaming, [gaming](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/the-signal/speed/what-is-latency-in-gaming), video calls, or today's vast array of connected devices (IoT). #### Jump to a Section 1. DSL uses a broader frequency spectrum across existing telephone lines, allowing both analog (voice) signals and digital data (internet) transmission to happen simultaneously. ### __Types of DSL__ Here's a look at three different types of DSL technologies: - __Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)__. Cuando hablamos de DSL, esto es a lo que se refiere la mayoría de la gente, ya que es el tipo más popular. La ADSL es "asimétrica" porque ofrece velocidades de descarga más rápidas que las de carga. It's well-suited for things like light web browsing, streaming, and downloading. - __Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL).__ SDSL is "symmetric" in that it delivers equal upload and download speeds. It's generally used by small- or medium-sized businesses that need consistent two-way data transfer but don't want to lease an extra line. - __Very High Bitrate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL).__ VDSL offers even higher data transfer speeds than ADSL and, while it's limited compared to fiber and today's newer technologies, it's said to be the next-generation of DSL, since it better accommodates today's demand for high-definition video streaming and online gaming. ### __Who would choose DSL over newer options?__ Sometimes, in rural areas, DSL is the only option, since it utilizes phone lines, which are widely available, whereas cable and fiber lines may not be. Eso significa que DSL puede ser la única opción disponible por ahora, aparte quizás de Internet por satélite, que puede no ser más rápido, y es a menudo más caro. Because DSL is pretty affordable, it's also a good option for light internet users who just want to do the basics like check their email and browse the web here and there. ### __What about 5G home internet?__ You may have heard all the talk about 5G, the fifth generation of wireless network technology. As it becomes more widely available, it's allowing people to [cut the cord](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/the-signal/isp/ethernet-cables-lan-cables-home-internet) with old-fashioned internet providers and choose reliable, wireless home internet instead. At T-Mobile, America's fastest growing [Home Internet](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet) provider, we continue to invest in bringing our network and affordable service to small towns, rural areas, and big cities alike. De hecho, 50 millones de hogares en todo el país ahora son elegibles para Internet residencial de T-Mobile, un tercio de ellos en zonas rurales del país, muchas de las cuales anteriormente tenían acceso limitado o nulo a opciones de banda ancha. You can [check here](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/eligibility) to see if it's available near you yet. ### __How does T-Mobile Home Internet work?__ T-Mobile utilizes a [5G Gateway](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/the-signal/internet-devices/what-is-5g-gateway) device in tandem with the next generation of Wi-Fi technology, Wi-Fi 6, to keep you connected at home. The device is controlled via a [convenient app](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/app) and since it's virtually wireless (only one plug and you're done!), you can set it up in minutes hassle free. You can also [try it out](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/get-started) for 15 days before you [cut ties with your other provider](https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet/the-signal/isp/how-to-get-wi-fi-for-less).
