gmail SMTP fails with T-Mobile home network

I think I have a similar problem, in that gmail cannot send or recieve if I use an access point downstream from the T-Mobile modem. If I connect to the modem wi-fi Gmail will work, but if I use the access point wi-fi (I used a separate SSID to know which I'm connected to) Gmail won't work. Gmail does work fine from my PC, which is connected via Ethernet cable to the access point.
