Upgrade Early

i believe its both..you’ll need to finish paying off the current phone which has $633 left on it and then the new device will end up costing you $3.21 per month. it was a free phone due to im guessing an add a line promo or something along that. so free but you must keep it for a certain amount of time before you can upgrade it..breaking that means the promo gets cancelled and you end up paying off what was left of the promo.

i would still contact TMO like gramps28 said but pretty sure this is what theyre saying in your case.
