High-Speed Internet Gateway does not work with some apps on T-mobile Home Wifi Internet
I don't know if anybody can help. Encountered a few deal breaking moments with T-mobile Home Wifi internet.
I get a whopping 100-235mbps with my High-Speed Internet Gateway but it prevents full access to apps causing extreme lag spikes, pages not loading and video not playing with Amazon Prime Video (on PS4 and on Amazon Fire Stick 4k), TD Ameritrade trading platform for Windows 10, and to a lesser extent apps like Epic Games on PC
I also have T-vision TV package, that works fine. So does Netflix.
Epic games was able to be fixed once telling PC to use Google DNS 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4. respectively.
I had to use Nord VPN to get TD Ameritrade to function correctly without freezing at times, DNS change did not work here.
Amazon prime video is still a no go, constantly stops and takes a long time to load again only to stop again. DNS change also did not resolve the issue. It should still work with Nord VPN because it bypasses all T-Mobile filters, but I did not buy T-mobile Home WiFi internet to need the VPN all the time, so I did not bother trying VPN with Prime Video.
Is that something we can possibly fix in firmware? And soon please?
Speaking of firmware. There is no place to get a new Firmware update which the High-Speed Internet Gateway critically needs. It lacks too many features. One the most needed features is to allow the High-Speed Internet Gateway to turn in just a modem and turn off all routing features so that users can bring their own independent routers to handle DHCP and other advanced functions.
High-Speed Internet Gateway also has a bug where I can not fully disable all of the WiFi Signals. You can stop broadcast and SSID from being announced and reduce the radio power for 2.4ghz and 5ghz from 100% down to 12% but it is still not entirely off. I can still see a 5ghz band displaying a signal and allows me to connect when WiFi is supposed to be disabled.
Apparently there is a 5Ghz low and 5Ghz high antenna mode. And the 5ghz high is the one that remains visible and usable. Can not be turned off. I don't want to use the hub for wifi, just want to use hard wired internet.
I hope to see these issues addressed in the next firmware update with a resources on where we can obtain the new firmware update file as right now there is no information on that anywhere for the new High-Speed Internet Gateway.
At the very least I want to see the simple feature of turning the gateway into a modem all by itself and I can handle all the routing on my end instead and if it comes to it I can do a whole house VPN that way and bypass all the problems.
Older gateways had the expert mode from what I could see, please bring that back too if you can.

I have already tried turning it off and back on again, obviously does not work. VPN seems to be the only way to bypass all the problems, but since the unit can not disable routing to act solely as a modem, I can not use a separate router for DHCP and to run VPN for the whole house.

Sorry to hear you have issues with the 5G modem part, "alarmguy". Perhaps try a PC fan under your internet gateway to keep it cool.
I have included pictures to show how the 5Ghz WiFi part of the gateway can not be fully turned off in case there is a firmware update to fix this, which we have to do manually as far as I can tell since it asks for an update file to be uploaded through the PC, and there is nowhere currently where we can get that file.
I think T-mobile will be shooting themselves in the foot if they think the average home owner will not run into problems. The main issue I had last night was an average home owner issue.
Amazon prime video kept lagging out and running extremely slow or have extremely slow time to respond to request like downloading video thumbnails or loading into videos on both PS4 and on FireTvStick.
I gave up on it actually. With Xfinity we never had this issue.
What was weird is that after I closed out of Amazon Prime video from PS4 and from FireTv stick, I just started Amazon Prime Video directly from the app on LG TV, and that was the only simultaneous stream, and that worked flawlessly.
So I believe that the T-mobile wifi internet router part of the device gets confused when two users are on different devices within the same network and they try to use the same service.
That’s something that the average home owner does do.
However I have not seen this issue with Netflix that shares the same concept.
And on Amazon you are allowed 3 simultaneous streams. But even before streaming, like I said before, even just looking at the thumbnails of content to watch, they would barely load in if they even loaded at all. So the issue started before I even got to press play.
Again, never had these issues with Xfinity, so all the clues point at some confusion on T-mobile’s end.
T-mobile please fix this soon. Please and thank you!!!! Would be great to have full expert features for the gateway so that we can better manage all settings ourselves. - T-moWifiUSERRoaming Rookie

I am having a mostly stable experience with T-mobile WiFi by disabling all the SSID parts of the radios on all frequencies and using my own router as a network hub and wireless access point connected by wire to T-mobile gateway.
There is still the brief lag at times when requesting an online page or doing some task, and it also still experiences data hanging but it does not always crash apps as a result of data taking too long to come in or having brief pauses.
Last night I was playing COD Cold War Zombies on PC and I was hosting the party, no problems at all. I only played for about 2 hours thou.
I guess I have to keep in mind I am saving money compared to cable and overall the internet mostly works fine. I have downloaded about 400gb the first week without any throttling, so that's good too.
Most of my apps work fine. Those that don't are niche cases. Like for whatever reason Amazon prime video works okay unless I start a second prime video stream on the same network.
Some sites and apps don’t diplay correctly so I had to change DNS from default to Google DNS, I did that change for console and PC.
One of my PCs uses even more niche apps, and for that one I use a VPN which I already had.
When connecting my T-mobile phone to T-mobile wifi internet, the wifi calls feature in my phone can and does often break.
Clearly there is a lot of room to improve stability of the T-mobile gateway and home internet experience. But I feel for this month and maybe the next month too. It's worth keeping the service and watching to see if it improves with new firmware.
I really don't want to go back to Comcast / Xfinity and their terribly limited and expensive plans. Att is probably worse, not only don't i get much speed but it also is very unreliable where I live.
I think T-mobile has a real success opportunity in this area.

I can and do have all my wifi radios runs turned off in the Nokia Gray Tower. I dont know what photos you are showing me, maybe you have an older firmware?
The first photo you have posted is what my page looks like and programed exactly as written on page 27 of the manual that I posted a link too.I have the SSIDs and “Broadcast” turned off “Disabled” on all three radios. 2.5, low 5 and high 5.
I have a Motorola AC 2600n router connected via Ethernet to the Nokia Router/Modem and is where all my wireless devices connect through.There are no SSIDs showing up as an option for the Nokia Tower in my home. I can turn them on and off at will, in fact I used the quite capable built in Nokia router for a good week or two on the 2.5, low5 and high 5 then turned them off and use the Motorola Router exclusively now.
Its all clear in the manual as well, page 27, disable SSID and Broadcast.
I have no issues what so ever with any of my 28 wifi devices connecting, though no more then 18 are active at any one time as seen by the network. No issues with 5 Roku players, cellphones, 2 laptops, 2 desktops, wifi cameras, doorbell camera, network printers, ect, ect ,ect …
My problem is with a defective Nokia Modem/Router that will not connect to a secondary cell connection. It did for a couple weeks, however was very unreliable for more the 24 hours, my speeds when the secondary connection drops goes from 100 Mbps to 20, sometimes much worse, sometimes up to 40. Very unstable and very frustrating as I know the 5g modem must be defective as it no longer works at all.Lets face it, this modem/router was pushed out to the market place by Nokia way too soon.
TMobile states firmware updates will be automatically pushed when available. The 2.5 and 5G wifi radios have nothing to do with updates. Only the cell signals are used for updates.

I just got T-mobile internet, and Ethernet is connected to my Samsung TV, but for some reason, Amazon Prime doesn't work. Can anyone help?

I think for now Tmobile is after the average homeowner who wants internet access and isnt one to change settings. More or less an out of the box experience as this is what most homeowners are.
The Nokia Unit is not for anyone who wishes to change settings of any kind except the SSIDs. Im good with that except my Nokia Unit 5g receiver I think it burned out, no longer can get the 5g and I used to have 4 bars. Right before that an "CPU Overheat" message was displaying on the LED screen of the unit.
As far as controlling the 2.4 and two 5 ghz bands that you can easily do, You CAN turn off anything you want as far as that goes.

As it stands my router behaves more like a switch. The T-mobile Gateway still handles DNS and routing functions. I am still able to set other devices (PC,s and Consoles) manually to use other DNS and they work.
With T-mobile DNS I have more problems like frequent disconnects so I have to set google DNS instead individually with everything. It really improved stability for me. Cloudflare also seems to be causing issues on 0.0.0.0
Funny thing about the router I use Linksys EA9500 once set into bridge mode you can never log back into it unless you reset it or find the IP that was assigned to it by default after being put into bridge mode.
So as it stands, with T-mobile router handling all the data and not having any advanced user options, I can not see a network map of my devices and I am unable to go back into the router settings to tinker until I find the IP T-mobile assigned to it. (unless i perform a hard reset). Luckily I had my SSID and passwords already set up on my bridged router how I wanted before doing the switch so I don't have to go back in to tinker.
I have tried an equally high end router of last generation (wifi5) at my fiancees place, and I may swap with that one. That one is also set in AP mode, but with her comcast box. It has a lot more options for granular control. TP-Link AC4000 i think it was, tri band mu-mimo as well. 300mbps typical wifi download max throughput in real world scenario.
If there is one thing I learned about routers over the years, never ever buy a cheap one, and never ever buy the ones that try to make it easy out of the box. They remove too many features.
I just wish T-mobile sold a gateway and router separately so we could just use the gateway as a simple modem. That would be IDEAL!!! - wildchldTransmission Trainee
The DNS is not the greatest but does work with a router between the Trashcan and your home network.
Very important that you turn off ALL DEVICES after setup and restart in this order…
ALL DEVICES ON THE NETWORK NEED TO BE SET TO AUTO DNS
Trashcan (takes along time to fully boot give it 10 mins)
Now your router (same thing give it time to fully boot)
Now you can start all other devices on the network
This way they pull all the new DNS info into the devices. If this is not completed in this order your devices will have all kinds of different DNS settings.

Yes I had problems with web sites not loading Amazon was one now it loads every time. I have found that the Trashcan's web interface is better than using the crappy app but it very slow at loading the info so it seems like it's not online or loading. Give it more time… It seems that the T-Mobile branding has slowed the device interface to a crawl too. Last thing Thanks T-Mobile for turning your subscribers into your beta testers for this device!

so. although i was not able to read all the comments, it sounds like we are all experiencing somewhat of the same thing. I went from xfinity to tmobile because it was cheaper but notice that the performance to be less than. I am finding that i cannot go to certain sites that i have been using it just locks up constantly. So, I would have to go to my incognito mode on google chrome and it would work. I notice that when i am watching a movie or show on my computer it lags.. buffers.. and sometimes i have to get out of it and come back in in order to get it streaming again. I mean from day one that the router was plugged and set. I just havent had time to get some help on it. But honestly i dont think they can do anything about it. I may be returning to Xfinity.

I use my LG V6 for internt on my computer and tv access… you do tethering and mobile hot spot and connect with a USB for computer. For tv or anything else look for the name that is given as your connection ex: LGV6 #### 's . Hope this helps someone
