High-Speed Internet Gateway does not work with some apps on T-mobile Home Wifi Internet
I don't know if anybody can help. Encountered a few deal breaking moments with T-mobile Home Wifi internet.
I get a whopping 100-235mbps with my High-Speed Internet Gateway but it prevents full access to apps causing extreme lag spikes, pages not loading and video not playing with Amazon Prime Video (on PS4 and on Amazon Fire Stick 4k), TD Ameritrade trading platform for Windows 10, and to a lesser extent apps like Epic Games on PC
I also have T-vision TV package, that works fine. So does Netflix.
Epic games was able to be fixed once telling PC to use Google DNS 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4. respectively.
I had to use Nord VPN to get TD Ameritrade to function correctly without freezing at times, DNS change did not work here.
Amazon prime video is still a no go, constantly stops and takes a long time to load again only to stop again. DNS change also did not resolve the issue. It should still work with Nord VPN because it bypasses all T-Mobile filters, but I did not buy T-mobile Home WiFi internet to need the VPN all the time, so I did not bother trying VPN with Prime Video.
Is that something we can possibly fix in firmware? And soon please?
Speaking of firmware. There is no place to get a new Firmware update which the High-Speed Internet Gateway critically needs. It lacks too many features. One the most needed features is to allow the High-Speed Internet Gateway to turn in just a modem and turn off all routing features so that users can bring their own independent routers to handle DHCP and other advanced functions.
High-Speed Internet Gateway also has a bug where I can not fully disable all of the WiFi Signals. You can stop broadcast and SSID from being announced and reduce the radio power for 2.4ghz and 5ghz from 100% down to 12% but it is still not entirely off. I can still see a 5ghz band displaying a signal and allows me to connect when WiFi is supposed to be disabled.
Apparently there is a 5Ghz low and 5Ghz high antenna mode. And the 5ghz high is the one that remains visible and usable. Can not be turned off. I don't want to use the hub for wifi, just want to use hard wired internet.
I hope to see these issues addressed in the next firmware update with a resources on where we can obtain the new firmware update file as right now there is no information on that anywhere for the new High-Speed Internet Gateway.
At the very least I want to see the simple feature of turning the gateway into a modem all by itself and I can handle all the routing on my end instead and if it comes to it I can do a whole house VPN that way and bypass all the problems.
Older gateways had the expert mode from what I could see, please bring that back too if you can.

I have already tried turning it off and back on again, obviously does not work. VPN seems to be the only way to bypass all the problems, but since the unit can not disable routing to act solely as a modem, I can not use a separate router for DHCP and to run VPN for the whole house.

That's crazy, I haven't had those issues. I get about 3 bars on 5g, or 4bars if I orient it better however it's still good enough in non-ideal location where I prefer to have it.
Had the unit for nearly 2 months now. I keep it in a cool spot of the house, loads of ventilation around it and with the wifi turned off on it, it doesn't heat itself as much, so less of a chance of it breaking prematurely.
Internet is running pretty good. Occasional hitches still include slightly slower response time on web pages vs cable. In FPS video games it's mostly fine with occasional very brief split second lag. For streaming video is perfect, general downloads perfect again. Slower paced games also perfect.
For stock trading like TWS, i have to use NORD VPN connected to Chicago (nearest to me) using UDP protocol and split tunneling so only the "Chromium" app of the TWS workstation gets tunneled otherwise the whole system would. And you're probably wondering why VPN, because without it, it simply doesn't work right. T-mobile must be blocking certain ports, or something about their filtering methods cause the app to stall without VPN. Didn't need vpn with Xfinity. Nord VPN is cheap and besides i was already using it for other things so it's not a bother.
I also VM into Linux at same time and manually set the network it uses as the non vpn one, otherwise it runs weird.
Sure, it's a lot of steps. But once i figured it out once, it's all automatic now and runs perfectly. Bye Xfinity Crapcast, see you never.
I'm just happy not to worry about data cap anymore and not overpay for that privilege. I also signed up for T-Mobile TVision TV streaming service, it is 100% worth it considering how much I save on internet now. And you get more than just live TV, but also Netflix style shows!!! $50 well spent. They also have a $40 deal worth looking into. With Comcast they wanted $30 just for 10 local channels i get for free with antenna anyways, pft.
I'm lucky enough to have near perfect line of sight to a tower within a mile away, so my speeds are great anywhere from 65 to 235 with the peak time average being more around 85 to 125mbps Mbps download and consistent 50-60 Mbps uploads
I also downloaded a little over 1TB of data my first month. Never throttled. Truly unlimited.

My problem is with a defective Nokia Modem/Router that will not connect to a secondary cell connection. It did for a couple weeks, however was very unreliable for more the 24 hours, my speeds when the secondary connection drops goes from 100 Mbps to 20, sometimes much worse, sometimes up to 40. Very unstable and very frustrating as I know the 5g modem must be defective as it no longer works at all.Lets face it, this modem/router was pushed out to the market place by Nokia way too soon.
TMobile states firmware updates will be automatically pushed when available. The 2.5 and 5G wifi radios have nothing to do with updates. Only the cell signals are used for updates.
I am having SAME issue. Whenever I connect an ethernet cable to the T-Mobile Nokia5G gateway, the 2nd cell signal disconnect. This means no 5G signal and only getting 4G. So I disconnect the ethernet cable and reboot it, then I get 5G on 2nd signal connected again. I may have to return this piece junk.

I had loads of issues today with it.
I am not getting errors from the unit itself. But when for example I even want to do a speed test. It takes a few seconds before it starts the test. With Xfinity it was almost right away.
Then when using Ameritrade trading platform, sometimes it will not connect. But then with VPN it will connect.
Or sometimes it will be connected and drop the connection despite me not actually losing connection. So the 5g Modem or the filters that Tmobile towers use on their back end don't seem to be switching data fast enough.
I am cancelling my service and going back to Xfinity, which is not what I wanted to do. I hope T-mobile improves over the next year or 2 and I will come back. I hate Xfinity Comcast service, they are the worst with billing, but at least the internet is reliable with them.
T-mobile is so close to being perfect, if only they could eliminate the lag.

Clearly there is a lot of room to improve stability of the T-mobile gateway and home internet experience. But I feel for this month and maybe the next month too. It's worth keeping the service and watching to see if it improves with new firmware.
I really don't want to go back to Comcast / Xfinity and their terribly limited and expensive plans. Att is probably worse, not only don't i get much speed but it also is very unreliable where I live.
I think T-mobile has a real success opportunity in this area.
I had a lot of the same lagging issues until about 2 days ago, and I haven't changed any settings. It seems they're doing some updates on their end too. Hopefully it remains stable.

I guess I disabled the wifi the wrong way, followed page 27 and went to each SSID channel and disabled.
Yet in the status screen it still says wifi is enabled and shows transmission power….however on the statistics screen and WLAN tab it says both 2.4 and 5 GHz are both off.
Then when I do a wifi search with my PC it still shows TMobileWiFi-2.4GHz and TMobileWiFi-5.0GHz as available networks to connect to. I'll have to turn off router and see if those stop showing up.
Not sure why it does that. I never set those names up as the network names and I doubt my neighbors signed up for T-mobile gateway the same exact time I did.
Also when manually turning the unit off and back on, it resets some of my settings and defaults me to default admin and password as well as resetting the wifi settings. So now I do reboots from the web UI browser instead.
Anyways, thanks for trying to help.
I will have to call customer service and see what they say. Maybe there's an automatic update on the way as doing manual updates it asks me to drag and drop the update file into the web UI...and I have no clue where to get an update file to so. I really hope you are right and they also do it automagically.
Fingers crossed, if these issues aren’t resolved in like a month, that will force Xfinity to come back, but at least there I don’t experience these kinds of issues. - magenta6804295Network Novice
I use my LG V6 for internt on my computer and tv access… you do tethering and mobile hot spot and connect with a USB for computer. For tv or anything else look for the name that is given as your connection ex: LGV6 #### 's . Hope this helps someone

Sorry to hear you have issues with the 5G modem part, "alarmguy". Perhaps try a PC fan under your internet gateway to keep it cool.
I have included pictures to show how the 5Ghz WiFi part of the gateway can not be fully turned off in case there is a firmware update to fix this, which we have to do manually as far as I can tell since it asks for an update file to be uploaded through the PC, and there is nowhere currently where we can get that file.
I think T-mobile will be shooting themselves in the foot if they think the average home owner will not run into problems. The main issue I had last night was an average home owner issue.
Amazon prime video kept lagging out and running extremely slow or have extremely slow time to respond to request like downloading video thumbnails or loading into videos on both PS4 and on FireTvStick.
I gave up on it actually. With Xfinity we never had this issue.
What was weird is that after I closed out of Amazon Prime video from PS4 and from FireTv stick, I just started Amazon Prime Video directly from the app on LG TV, and that was the only simultaneous stream, and that worked flawlessly.
So I believe that the T-mobile wifi internet router part of the device gets confused when two users are on different devices within the same network and they try to use the same service.
That’s something that the average home owner does do.
However I have not seen this issue with Netflix that shares the same concept.
And on Amazon you are allowed 3 simultaneous streams. But even before streaming, like I said before, even just looking at the thumbnails of content to watch, they would barely load in if they even loaded at all. So the issue started before I even got to press play.
Again, never had these issues with Xfinity, so all the clues point at some confusion on T-mobile’s end.
T-mobile please fix this soon. Please and thank you!!!! Would be great to have full expert features for the gateway so that we can better manage all settings ourselves.
