Can I pause or disable my 5Ghz band?

Which gateway do you have, the Arcadyn model or the Nokia?

I'm using the Arcadyn model and am able to have 2GHz & 5GHz connections under separate names and passwords instead of their default automatic mode which merges the two frequencies under one separate name and password. Unfortunately, I don't see a way to disable 5GHZ exclusively unless you're willing to void the warranty by following a guide on YouTube on how to do (Gateway could bootloop if done incorrectly.)
