Locked iphone

We live in Australia, my son purchased an iphone and now seller has ghosted him.

When he tried to put in his sim card after sale, it came up locked.

we contacted Apple who said T-Mobile has a lock on it for a small debt.

The iphone has been locked by T-Mobile apparently for $70????

we are trying to find a way to pay this debt and get the iphone unlocked by T-Mobile if possible.

we did ring them but they (T-Mobile) said my son would have to go to the distributor that sold it????

which would probably be impossible

any help will be appreciated.

Only the original purchaser of the device can pay a debt on the device because that debt is tied to their account.  Is it SIM locked or us the device blacklisted for nonpayment?  Either way, T-Mobile can not help you resolve this.  Keep trying to contact the seller and return it to them.  Whatever platform you purchased it from.  See if they have some sort of buyer guarantee for situations like this.
