If you are a postpaid customer, it should as long as you have roaming enabled on your device and there is no roaming block on your line. Prepaid is a completely different. Roaming for prepaid internationally outside of Canada and Mexico are very hit and miss.
Roaming can get really expensive pretty fast so make sure you are aware of the usage costs where you are traveling to.

Go to the Japanese carrier and check to see if your phone is compatible by doing an imei check.
