What do I need to do when traveling to Europe?

I'm trying to figure out what I need to travel to Europe and be on a cruise. I will need data to map things out, look up restaurants, access emails, send and receive texts. I have the Wi-Fi package on the ship but don't know how to limit to use that when on ship and what I do when in ports? Airplane mode + a data package?
