gmail SMTP fails with T-Mobile home network

The failure of GMAIL SMTP servers happens to me if I make my phone a WiFi hotspot. This has been a recent development, within the last 6 months. Now that I have T-Mobile Home Internet (which is the same service) it is happening with that too. Thought everything was good, but found out this morning I have very important email stuck in my outbox! I have to leave my home to connect to a Starbuck internet in order to get email to work. It is so frustrating!
I’m on a Macbook Pro. Same thing happens on my iPad except I downloaded the GMail App and it works fine if I use the GMail app instead of iOS Mail app. I did some research and some say it has to do with less secure apps, but that doesn’t make any sense if I can just use a different internet service and it works just fine.
