T-Mobile Home Gateway Geographical Location a concern

I've been using the T-Mobile home gateway for three weeks now.  Generally, it works well; I am using it to post this message.  The download speed has been anywhere from 60 to 300 mbps, so usually not as fast as cable but adequate.  I've had no problems sending and receiving emails, using social media, streaming movies and TV shows, or being on Zoom calls.  The Zoom calls themselves and Yahoo's SMTP and POP servers use IPv4, so the 464XLAT has done its job.

But the one thing that has got under my skin is that because of the aforementioned 464XLAT, some sites and apps think I am 100 miles from where I am...at least!  I am not lucky enough to live in a city that has one of T-Mobile's NAT64 routers.  It doesn't figure into most of what I do, but the issue is there.

I will stick with T-Mobile a little longer, to see if I can get to a point where this doesn't bother me.  If it does, I will have to switch back to my cable provider.

@mikejoe7g as a few of have experienced on this forum, our listed T-Mobile local tower is miles from where we are located. For me, mine is listed in Oakland CA, but I live near Sacramento CA. I personally don't care as the upload/download speeds are great for my $50 monthly fee (less than ½ that of Comcast.

That said, you may consider a paradigm shift to the same perspective. We can't control how T-Mobile routes internet traffic, but we do care about performance. So what if external DNS shows that our location is 30-100 miles from our specific location. As long as the internet access is unlimited and consistent, the location component doesn't matter to me. (My two cents). I think @bocaboy2591 may feel the same way.

    I hope this helps!

  • @mikejoe7g, I agree with @copz1998 about performance and the geographical location of the external IP.  If it really bothers you, or you have a compelling reason to change it, you can use a VPN to move your external IP to something closer to your geographical location. There should be no reason that won't work with 464XLAT.

    ¡Buena suerte!
