Upgrade Phone without changing number
I was trying to upgrade my phone and add a line but the only option to upgrade my phone is trying to make me change my phone number; can i upgrade my phone and add a line for my old phone but keep my current number?

If you use physical Sims it really doesn't matter since the phone number is tied to the Sim not the phone.

Well it matters if you are trying to upgrade your device on the website --- ridiculous message saying "number in use by t-mobile user;can't transfer number to t-mobile" --- no kidding - it's my phone number. I have been impressed with T-Mobile online upgrades (3 in the last 18 months) but now it's just gone sideways - will have to go into store to upgrade my phone. You can say it doesn't matter but when the on-line system is giving you a new number it seems little like there isn't any going back ~ you risk losing your current phone number.

The OP wants to buy a new phone and add a new line for his old phone so in their instance it doesn't matter if it's physical Sims

Hey there @ascott_1991 were you able to get your new line added and your new phone ordered? I have a couple ways you can get it done if you are interested.
If you want to do one transaction, you can select the option to add a new line to your account and select the new phone you want to get. If you decide to finance that phone, you will see the device payment charge show on the bill under the new phone number. When you get the new phone in the mail, though, you can put your current sim card in the new phone and the new sim card in your old phone.
You can also get similar results doing 2 separate orders. One order is the phone upgrade. In the shop tab, select the phone you want and choose Upgrade an existing line. Select your phone number and move through the order until the end. If you put the phone on payments, you will see the monthly charge under your phone number on the bill. The second order will be for the new line. When you go through the order for the new phone number, you will select the Bring your own device option when it asks if you want to buy a new phone and you can choose to get a new physical sim card. When that gets to you, put it in your current phone and the new number will be on that phone. Looks like a lot when typed out like this, but it is usually pretty easy in action.
Hope this helps.
