Samsung Note 8 SM-N950U doesn't support VoLTE

Dear Team,

I own a Samsung Note 8 SM-N950U bought from T-Mobiles when I was in USA. Currently I am in India and post Oreo update the option to turn on/off VoLTE is hidden. Now, when I try to use a sim card from a national network provider called JIO which only works on VoLTE enabled phones, I am unable to make any calls or send sms.

When I checked the network status in the phone it says VoLTE is disabled. Kindly tell me if there is a way to enable VoLTE on my device.

  • Unfortunately this happens to non native/carrier branded phones on other carriers.

While VoLte will work on the Tmobile network it may not work on a different network.

It seems to be a Samsung thing. They customize their phones for exactly what the carrier wants and not one thing more. Many people with Samsung phones purchased from Sprint or Verizon and unlocked, find that the phones perform very poorly on T-Mobile. This is one reason I prefer to buy unflagged devices.

You might want to look into reflashing the phone with N950F firmware.

A U, U1, and W device can not be flashed to the stock F firmware.  The North American SnapDragon device firmware is not compatible with the Exynos firmware.  However, a CSC or combination flash of a mix of the two firmware should yield the desired result.  The best place for instructions on how to do so, would be to visit the XDA-Developers Note 8 forum.

  • That's really sad. Why does T-Mobile add such a restriction even after the phone is unlocked?

Cross-flashing has nothing to do with rooting your device.  Root is a modification of the firmware where flashing part or all of another factory image is still stock firmware.
