Cruise

Hey!  Going on a cruise to Cozumel - How can I use my phone on the cruise ship and NOT be charged for Data services & fees? I only want to use phone for pictures and Cruise App for activities.  Please help!

  • That's the thing with cruise ships.  Everything needs some sort of internet connection.  Cruise ship WiFi is not free!  If you really want internet while inboard.  Make sure your device is in Airplane mode and then you turn on WiFi.  Purchase a WiFi package before taking your trip from the cruise ship amenities list or from the travel agent that booked your trip for you.

Turn your device off before you get within 3 miles of the cruise ship and don't turn it back on until after your cruise is over and you are at least a few miles away from the ship.

Cruise ship pricing is incredibly expensive with calls ranging upwards of $7 a minute and texts upwards of $3.  Data jist adds to the insane costs because the cruise ships use their own on board tower to provide service at whatever rates they want to charge.  Cruise ship towers connect with satellites to provide their services, which is why it is so expensive.

Some WiFi is actually reasonable cost on cruise ships.  At one time, when I was in Europe, I could get terrestrial cell service from TIM/O2 in Italy/Malta/Greece/etc. from shore.  At the time, the ships were only 3G, and I disabled all 3G bands on my phone and could enjoy the ~128kbps service from land (lol).

Going to Cozumel, short trips, I’d _REALLY_ make sure that you don’t have cell service enabled on the ship ...even if you don’t pick up the ship, you might roam on Petrocomm in the gulf of Mexico (also expensive roaming).

Thanks Syaoran - but what of I turn on Airplane mode and only use that?  Trying to use their App for activities.

  • still wont work. you need data in order to use said app..which means theyre pushing you to use their wifi.
