Travelling to Italy, France, Spain and Portugal this autumn. I have 55+ plan. Do I need yo do something in particular to have phone and data up and running there?

You don't have to do anything to activate roaming on a 55+ plan. You should have talk (25¢/min) text (free) and slow data (free) when you arrive. If you plan to talk a lot or need high-speed data, you can add a Data Pass after you arrive via the T-Mobile app.
Here are some of my personal hints for roamers.

I have the same question, and I see yours from 11 months ago went unanswered. Sigh. The website is little use. Did you get coverage in Portugal? Did you have to do anything special before departure?

You just need to know who to tag. @drnewcomb

Thx. So, will my iphone 13 Pro work when I land in Lisbon? I have the retired One Plus 55+ unlimited plan. I get 5GB high speed data automatically in Canada, but this will be my first time in Portugal. My phone is unlocked, so maybe I download an esim plan and then activate in Portugal? I'm terrified of getting lost and not having access to Map directions.

You should have 256 kbps data. With Google Maps you can preload offline maps of the area you are visiting which will make navigation work just fine at that speed. If you find 256 kbps to constraining you can do the eSIM thing or you can activate a Data Pass via the T-Mobile app.
