T-mobile gives a locked phone when they say phone on us --- its a trap.
Whats the point having a Iphone where one cannot use all features of the iphOne.

"Locked" means cell data and service will only work on Tmobile's network. All other features and capabilities are unaffected. The promotion is in two parts - 1) you get billed in equal amounts over the promotional period for the full price of thee phone 2) you are issued an equal credit to bring your monthly net payment for the phone $0. In order to make it worthwhile to Tmobile they require you to stay on their service for the promotional period and when that ends, the phone is yours and you did not pay anything for it and you can also unlock the phone so it will work on any carrier's service.
I don’t know of any carrier that gives you a phone for free where you can immediately cancel service and still own the phone without having to pay the balance off.

Checked with Apple support
only T-mobile can unlock it. It has nothing to do with Apple. T-mobile has kept the lock on so called "free on us" phone. It's just another trap from T-mobile on the consumer.

Canned answer from Apple, they store the imei numbers on their server and Tmobile has to put in the request to release the lock.
You may own the phone but not the OS.
@tidbits knows more about Apple policies than most people on this board.

Yea, it's t-mobile not putting the request on the sol called "phone on us". Apple has that feature and only the service provider can request to unlock the phone.
“phone on us” is a misnomer and you stay put until the entire payment (device credits pays itself to T-mobile) .
what this means is your phone is not yours, it’s t-mobile 🤔

You don't own the software on the phone because of end users license agreement or EULA as it's called. Apple owns it which is why you can't make any changes to it without Apple signing off.

Apple has given option for the carrier to do it and T-mobile does not want to do it, they want you to trapped to their service and phone is theirs until device is paid off fully by device credits. "Phone on us " is a misnomer again. T-mobile change your ads and don't trap ur customers.

Read the terms you signed when you got the free phone. It's free after 24 payments of bill credits by Tmobile.

That's the mistake I did, just believed the sales person who said it gets unlocked after 1 billing cycle. This used to be the case with Verizon - my previous service provider

Wish it happens. No point have a locked phone while on international roaming and cannot install a local eSIM

ppl can use FCC Complaints to file complaint on this regards. Hope T-mobile listens and does not keep phone locked.
