swapping SIM between two ipads

I recently got a new ipad, did my research, and everything I could find online from both apple and T-Mobile says that I should be able to just take the SIM card out of my old iPad and put it into the new one.

I did that, but the Cellular Service tab in Settings isn’t activated and I can’t figure out what the problem is. For reference, the SIM is going from a 5th Generation iPad to a 6th Generation.
