I've personally visited Ecuador and Peru and the coverage was very good. Even Machu Picchu had excellent coverage!
If you plan to make a lot of calls, there are unlimited flat rate add on service. Details are in the link above. Also the international phone number to Tmobile Customer Service is free as long as you call from your cell phone. I ordered a new iPhone while in Peru and paid nothing for the 30 min call. Just make sure to dial the right number +1-505-998-3793.
