04/14/2023 - Internet Service Throttle Downed to 5 - 10 Mbps
04/15/2023
My Internet speed in my location (Monroe County, NY) is normally around 80+ Mbps. Late last evening (04/14/2023) the speed inexplicably dropped to 5 - 10 Mbps, which made web browsing unusable. i had to move the gateway device to another room in my house to get the speed back up to around 40 - 50 Mbps.
T-Mobile technical/operational support must have tweaked something on their end because nothing changed on my end. Today (04/15/2023) the speed is back to normal.
Did anyone else in my location experience the same phenomenon?
More likely a coincidence. When you are down to 10mbps, check your app, More, Advanced Cellular Metrics and see if your 5G entry is blank (meaning you are on LTE). When it is only 50, check to see what band 5G is using. What I notice is at band N41, my speed is good. When on band N71, I get slower download and almost zero upload.

For Smart Meter question, I would start with reddit. When I do a search on a question, I frequently end up getting my answer previously asked and answered on reddit. LOL

@OldWin7ProUser in California I did not experience the connection issue. All good.

pphw,
That was a helpful suggestion and because I’m a curious person by nature, I started the T-Mobile Internet app to check out what you wrote.
I went to the MORE option at the bottom of the right side of the main display and selected, "Advanced cellular metrics." It displayed two options, "LTE" and "5G". Under LTE, I scrolled down to the bottom and found BAND, which is the frequency range used by the cellular network. it displayed "B2". B2 operates at 1900 MHz.
Under the 5G BAND, it displayed "N41". The n41 frequency speed band is 2.5 GHz. (I wrote that correctly, 2.5 GHz, not 2.4 GHz). The n71 frequency speed band is 600 MHz.
However there is nothing I can do from my end when the network throttles down. All I can do is call customer service and make an inquiry.
Thanks again for you suggestion; it helped me to better understand the T-Mobile network.
P.S. This is off-topic but I need to find an electrical engineer who can answer a basic question about Smart Meters. Do you know of a IEEE community forum that I can get an answer to my question?
