That’s right. Promotional trade in consists of two parts:
- Fair market value - this is the amount you will get as a lump sum credit once your trade in device is received and confirmed.
- Promotional value - the remaining amount minus fair market value will be credited int 12-24 monthly credits depending on the offer.
I've traded in 5 phones in the past 2 years using this type of promotion and it has always worked this way and I got every penny that I was promised. My most recent one was $720 trade in for an iPhone X for a 13 Mini. I got $90 one time credit and the rest is being applied over 24 monthly credits.
The promotional credit is to incentivize to keep your TMO line for 24 months because if you cancel that line before 24 months, you forfeit the remaining credit. Your new phone is also charged to you in equal monthly payments so your up front costs are only the tax and maybe shipping. It's a win-win as long as you are reasonably sure you will keep using TMO for 24 months.
