My new 5G gateway shows excellent connection but internet speeds are slow.

My new 5G gateway shows excellent connection but internet speeds are slow. i just installed a second t-mobile gateway at a different location. it shows connection quality of very good but speeds are much faster than my original (home) location.  What could cause slow speeds when I have an excellent connection status?

  • Yes. There are plenty of people on the Forum who have documented working with Tech Support who were able to change something on the gateway, or its interface with the tower, that really made a difference.

I’m stating the “obvious” here….but if you’re using WiFi to test your speed, and you have a weak signal to the router, or are on a 2.4 Ghz band, you may not be getting very good test speeds independent of the tower.

Thanks, but I think not applicable.  These were the readings I got directly from the router when I reset it.  Of course the reading was displayed on my TV right next to the router, so i suppose wifi was involved, but i was not running a test.

  • I am not an engineer, but often the problem is with the tower you're connecting to for service. The gateway may show that you're connected with 4-5 bars, but there is either congestion or interference on that tower affecting your speed.

How you connect, e.g., the number of bars, isn't always tied back to download and upload speeds. It's like WiFi if the Internet goes out. You'll still see WiFi on your devices, but there's no Internet behind it because the source is down.

You should talk to T-Mobile support and see if a problem or maintenance is causing the difference in performance between the two locations.

    ¡Buena suerte!

"Talk to T-Mobile support.  . ."  Really?  Been on hold for over an hour now. . .

. . .but thank you for trying to help.  If the problem is at the tower, would T-Mo help with that?

I will keep trying to contact Tech Support, and not on a Sunday night!  TNX for the encouragement.
