36 TopicsHow to Connect to a Consumer VPN on T-Mobile Home Internet (5G Nokia Gateway)
I am NOT paid or endorsed by any VPN company or anyone else to make this post. This is simply what works for me and my particular VPN client. I am using the Nokia 5G grey tube router, and I've seen a few posts complaining that they can't use a VPN with it. Also special thanks to the T-Mobile rep who advised me on some of this when I got the service. If you're using PIA (and this may apply to your VPN as well), click the 3 dots, go to your settings, and do the following under the Connection tab: Make sure your protocol is OpenVPN Change your connection type to TCP Change your configuration method to Static After this, close the settings, and reconnect to your VPN. If using other software, make sure to save your settings if it does not automatically do so. It may take 1-5 minutes for your IP to change to your VPN. After this, google "what is my ip" and make sure it matches with your VPN. In my case, it took about 2 minutes for my IP to completely change over, even after my VPN client connected. Below are some pictures for those of you who aren't quite as savvy: I hope this helps anyone trying to use a VPN. I can't provide any support beyond this post, so best of luck.37KViews5likes22ComentariosGlobalProtect VPN not working with T-Mobile
I have seen several posts about VPNs not working with T-Mobile Home Internet. What is T-Mobile's plan to address this? I contacted my corporate IT department and they said it's not their VPN. All works fine on my old ATT home internet and Verizon Hotspot (work cell). Maybe I should drop T-Mobile Home Internet and go back to ATT.28KViews13likes61ComentariosHome internet service IPv6 traffic is all filtered even when using a Netgear LTE router. No port forwarding. Plz fix!
My background is in IT / networking and I started using Tmo Home Internet for the past 2 weeks. The router being shipped today to customers is missing very important features for power users - it actually broke my ability to remotely access my home via direct-connection using public IPv6 and IPv4 that I used on comcast. Contacting support for help is pretty much useless, although I have raised a few tickets regarding the major issues affecting me since switching ISPs, namely: Unable to ping my IPv6 WAN address given by T-mobile (to remotely monitor my internet connection) Unable to remotely access my home via my VPN server which listens to connections on the WAN IPv6 address (again, T-mobile is filtering ALL my incoming traffic - comcast, att fiber, other major players in the market don't do this filtering to endpoints except for spam port 25) Connecting to a VPN server hosted on the internet is unreliable and unstable. T-mobile does not offer IPv6 Prefix Delegation (comcast has it, att fiber does too) I've spent the majority of my time trying to figure out ways to make this work. Most folks out there are blaming the Nokia router firmware which is really locked down by T-mobile, so being the IT engineer I pretend to be I purchased a Netgear LAX20 which is T-mobile and AT&T certified - I swapped SIMs for my Home internet service and tested both. Even with a router that I fully control, with firewall disabled and allowing WAN icmp/ping responses T-mobile seems to continue to filter traffic (even pings!) incoming towards my service equipment… to make a fair comparison I got an AT&T SIM card and repeated the tests. On AT&T I can ping and access my device remotely when it is on the AT&T LTE network on the same Netgear LAX20. Decided to post here to vent and share some findings, as this is somewhat frustrating that other LTE carriers that do not offer 'home internet' service do allow you to control and manage your network as you see fit while the new "home internet" service does not give you any control at all. Those users who wish to be able to remotely manage their smart home should perhaps stay away for now until T-mobile decides to do the right thing which is for "home internet" service subscribers to have different security network rules than cellphones on the network. T-mobile please fix your business model for this new service, starting with adding the ability to request zero network filtering for home internet subscribers and the ability to get IPv6 prefix delegated.23KViews51likes57ComentariosVPN (SonicWall) will not connect over T-mobile 5G Hotspot

If you have a VPN issue, specifically GlobalProtect, I think I found a fix that has been working for me with T-Mobile Home Internet. Tldr; Set your T-Mobile Home Internet Wi-Fi Network name to automatically connect (so it connects when you turn on your PC) and under properties change the Network profile from Public to Private - viola. GlobalProtect VPN now works for me, so I can now assess whether I will keep Comcast or T-Mobile. Decisions lol Background: My current provider was Comcast and my rate is $50 with "Promo", ebill, and Autopay for their Blast! Service. I use my own equipment (Moto modem, eero Wi-Fi 6 router) - no issues. The agony/anxiety of having to call them every year when your promo ends and your bill goes up, you threaten to leave, they say they have the same price but for lower speeds, you don't accept, then eventually they keep you at the same rate and speed - after several years of this same rodeo it is annoying. Present: It's my 3rd day of having T-Mobile Home Internet. With Comcast I was getting anywhere from 200 -300 Mbps. I get the same or better speeds with T-Mobile, hitting as high as 465 Mbps and 30 on Upload. In short, the speeds at their lowest thus far, have been the same or better. I appear to be on Band 66 which gets me the best speeds in my location and Band 2 still fast but I do see a speed decrease. Unsure if/how the Primary/Secondary connection are at play and if I'm taking advantage of 5G. The first evening was cool, until the next morning I tried to connect to my work VPN and couldn't. When I called that second day, the rep opened a ticket to backdate my software to .0168 stating this was a temp fix for VPN issues - well later that day I noticed the firmware version dropped - so I tested with Ethernet cord and it still did not work. I tried 3 resets, rebooting and searching online for self-service to update my firmware - no dice- faux pas - had to call back in to request they update to latest firmware as speeds were still good but I noticed a difference in the firmware versions. At this time, still waiting for the "push" smh to go back to .0178. In the past, with Comcast, I did not want to run an Ethernet cord so I would use my Wi-Fi seldomly- I could always connect to the VPN but if I could access the sites was hit or miss, then magically I plug in the dumb Ethernet cord and it works. So, I did the same with T-Mobile, read all the forum thread post on possible causes and fixes. Well accessing the MTU or Ports or whatever else is not something I could do, nor do I think it should even be this difficult between IpV6 and 4 - if 6 is the future then let it be! Anyways, so I was contemplating a return because if I can't use the VPN whose gonna pay my bill? Based on what I have read, unsure if it's the VPN provider, your companies own IT limitations protocols, the type of Internet connection required for the VPN to function, it seems like all are valid depending on your VPN, settings, and the ISP provider. So anyways, I really would love to have 1 bill and get rid of Comcast. So, because of the error or patch issue I would get if I turn on my work PC and it is not connected to an Internet source (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) it gives an error. I used to manually connect to Wi-Fi because when we changed VPN's it was hit or miss, so I changed it to Automatic connect to network. GlobalConnect logs in but I can't access data or my work sites, or even Google.com, I can open Outlook though lol -so I had an epiphany. I changed the setting, so it connects automatically AND I went into properties under the network name and changed the Network profile from Public to Private - then magically everything worked just fine! Smh - so is this the missing link with GlobalProtect VPN? Or my companies IT protocol for Wi-Fi? Either way 3 reboots later, I've tested, and all is well, so glad I don't potentially have to cancel T-Mobile Home Internet, or run an Ethernet cord in my home just to work - will continue to test. Now My Comcast ping ~10, with T-Mobile its ~25-45 - not a gamer so it doesn't concern me. I noticed when I do a speedtest on my work PC connected to VPN(via Wi-Fi of course) the ping was 54 and Dl was ~60-75 Mpbs - versus my personal PC on the same network was 27 ping and 399 - 465 Mbps down LOL . I have not and will not try Ethernet with the VPN anymore as Wi-Fi seems to be working and my work space is neat like I like it…7.3KViews1like13ComentariosHome Internet and VPN
I recently started using a Home Internet trashcan gateway. I am a data center admin and while working from home, have to have a VPN connection open all day into my employer's network to work. I can't reliably connect to my employers VPN, though. I frequently get unstable connection messages in Zoom, RDP, and other applications I need to frequent.. I'll see my rdp sessions crash and then sometimes the VPN kind of halts without disconnecting. If I disconnect and reconnect then it's okay for a little bit. If I hotspot with my phone, my VPN is rock solid all day. I called support and they had a supervisor downgrade my trashcan to a lower firmware that "works" with VPN. That only lasted a day before it upgraded back to the latest firmware. What do I need to do to be able to keep a stable vpn connection? I love the gateway, but if I can't do my work, I can't keep using it. Especially with my kids starting school in a couple weeks, knowing there's a possibility that they'll go virtual at some point this coming fall/winter.3.8KViews0likes5ComentariosCisco Anyconnect VPN and T-mobile
My TM internet is connected to a Deco mesh network and works awesome. When i connect to my Cisco Anyconnect VPN for work, my mesh network comes to a screeching halt. therefore, I connect to the TM gateway directly before connecting to VPN. It constantly kicks me out and has me at such a slow speed all of a sudden. I know this is a recurring theme but just putting it out there. TM needs to fix this or I will regrettably need to revert back to Xfinity which I really don't want to do but will have no choice. Working fully remote makes this exceptionally frustrating and difficult. ¿Tienes alguna idea?Solved3.7KViews0likes7ComentariosHotspot issues with Cisco Anyconnect
Trying to run down a solution to what seems to be a not that uncommon issue. We use the hot spot on our phone as a backup for our home internet service. The phone was just upgraded from a Galaxy S9 (4G LTE service) to a Galaxy A32 5G. We have two company provided devices, both using Cisco Anyconnect, but using different VPNs. Prior to upgrading, both devices could connect to the hot spot without issue. Though I can't remember when the last time we had to use the hot spot. Fortunately we have not had an internet outage until recently. One company device still connects without any problem. Personal devices don't have connection problems with the hot spot. The other company issued device has issues. Internal company sites and databases cannot be reached. Although messages and phone calls can still be made on Microsoft Teams, which I find odd. I'd think if the VPN could not connect, noting would work. The system in question runs Windows 10. The network status icon shows a connection. When you hover the mouse over the icon it shows the network name, the number 2, and (unauthenticated). For example: Connected to home internet with no issues: company.network Connected to phone hot spot and no VPN connection: company.network 2 (unauthenticated) We have tried tethering the device to the phone with a cable but get the same result. Tethering on the old phone had worked. So far the company IT has had no luck. I've read that the issue could be related to IPv4 vs IPv6 addressing, MTU size, and/or UDP being blocked on 5G where it had not been blocked on 4G LTE. Currently this is not too critical of an issue since the hot spot is only a backup connection but if our home internet goes out then we're screwed. Unfortunately there does not seem to be any solution that we can work on our end as we don't have privileges to access certain things on the device. Not that I want to mess with settings on a device that we don't own. Any insights are welcome. I'm just hoping to find something to point the company IT in the right direction.2.4KViews0likes2ComentariosCan't connect to work VPN using Sagemcom Fast 5688W Gateway
We got the Sagemcom Fast 5688W Gateway model for Home Internet, however, we can't connect to the work VPN. We called customer support twice and their responses were that "we don't provide any support to VPN". The IT support of my company asked us to inquire about some settings and configurations to T mobile support and the response was that "this is a plug and use device. All you can see is the information on Home Internet App. We don't know more than you do." After some research on the community, it looks that some Firmware versions were released to specifically address the VPN issues, but it was for the Nokia gateway not the Sagemcom gateway, https://www.t-mobile.com/support/home-internet/nokia-gateway We wonder if T mobile can release similar Firmware updates to the Sagemcom gateway to address the VPN issue ASAP, such as, Resolves VPN tunnel protocols IKEv2/L2TP/IPSec Improves known issues: Cisco AnyConnect VPN; GlobalProtect VPN connection issues; Degraded experience2.1KViews5likes9ComentariosCan't connect to AWS VPN starting this year
I use AWS VPN to connect to my work. There are times when I'm on the road and need to connect to work. I used to be able to just use my T-mobile hotspot from my Mac and work anywhere I had T-mobile connection. Since about the beginning of the year, I no longer can connect via AWS VPN. In the last couple of months I've been working with our IT department to figure out if anything is blocked on their end. They have made sure that I'm not blocked when connecting via my phone hotspot. There appear to be issues with IPv6 connections, but there's nothing that I can change on my T-mobile connection from my iPhone to change any of that. Anybody can connect using AWS VPN over t-mobile hotspot?Solved1.8KViews3likes9Comentarios
